Who are New Brunswickers?

Immigrants built New Brunswick, and newcomers from around the world continue to enrich our province. Approximately 730,000 people from many different cultures live in New Brunswick. New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual province in Canada and 33% of New Brunswickers speak French as their first language.

The original residents of this province were the First Nations aboriginal peoples who still call New Brunswick home. Later, French and English speaking settlers arrived, most coming from the British Isles and Europe. Today, many New Brunswick residents come from Asia, the Middle East, Central America, Africa, Australia and South America. We welcome new cultures into our communities and value cultural diversity.
